Intermediate and Advanced Ballet

All New students to Virginia Ballet School must take a placement class. Students are placed into levels based on knowledge, ability, and age. All dancers Intermediate II – Advanced are invited to join VBC’s Touring Ensemble.

Intermediate I

Intermediate I (minimum age 10)

 

  • Intermediate I level dancers are eligible to participate in the fall contemporary performance, VBC’s annual production of Nutcracker, and Spring performance.
  • Separate performance fees are required to participate in productions with additional days/times for rehearsals.
  • It is recommended that dancers invest in 3 classes/week – 2 ballet and 1 modern classes – unless informed otherwise by the Artistic Staff, to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality.
  • Recreational dancers who are not interested in performing but want to learn Classical Ballet or Modern technique are recommended to enroll in 2 classes to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality.
  • Students will be evaluated after Fall Semester and undergo an end of the year examination during the Spring Semester to determine readiness to progress to the next level.
  • Any student that wishes to perform Trepak in VBC’s annual Nutcracker performance MUST enroll in Character class.
Intermediate II

Intermediate II (minimum age 11)

– at this level, dancers will be evaluated to go on pointe.

 

  • Intermediate II level dancers are eligible to participate in the fall contemporary performance, VBC’s annual production of Nutcracker, and Spring performance. They may join the Touring Ensemble to perform at Outreach events. 
  • Separate performance fees are required to participate in productions and Touring Ensemble with additional days/times for rehearsals. 
  • It is recommended that dancers invest in 6 classes/week – 3 ballet, 1 Pre/Beginning pointe, and 2 modern classes – unless informed otherwise by the Artistic Staff, to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality. 
  • Recreational dancers who are not interested in performing but want to learn Classical Ballet or Modern technique are recommended to enroll in 2-4 classes to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality. 
  • Students will be evaluated after Fall Semester and undergo an end of the year examination during the Spring Semester to determine readiness to progress to the next level.

Intermediate III

Intermediate III (minimum age 12)

  • Recreational dancers who are not interested in performing but want to learn Classical Ballet or Modern technique are recommended to enroll in 2-4 classes to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality. 
  • Students will be evaluated after Fall Semester and undergo an end of the year examination during the Spring Semester to determine readiness to progress to the next level. 
  • For students to be on pointe they must be registered and attend a minimum of 2 ballet classes and 2 pointe classes per week.
Intermediate IV

Intermediate IV (minimum age 13)

 

  • Intermediate IV level dancers are eligible to participate in the fall contemporary performance, VBC’s annual production of Nutcracker, and Spring performance. They may join the Touring Ensemble to perform at Outreach events.
  • Separate performance fees are required to participate in productions and Touring Ensemble with additional days/times for rehearsals.
  • It is recommended that dancers wishing to perform invest in 8 classes/week – 3 ballet, 3 pointe, and 2 modern classes – unless informed otherwise by the Artistic Staff, to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality.
  • Recreational dancers who are not interested in performing but want to learn Classical Ballet or Modern technique are recommended to enroll in 4-6 classes to continue to improve in knowledge, technique, and musicality.
  • Students will be evaluated after Fall Semester and undergo an end of the year examination during the Spring Semester to determine readiness to progress to the next level.
  • For students to be on pointe they must be registered and attend a minimum of 2 ballet classes and 2 pointe classes per week.
Advanced Ballet

Advanced Ballet classes include Ballet, Pas de Deux, Pointe and Variations, Modern Dance, and Core Strength Training.

Advanced (minimum age 14 with 2 years of pointe work)

 

  • Advanced level dancers are eligible to participate in the fall contemporary performance, VBC’s annual production of Nutcracker, and Spring performance. They may join the Touring Ensemble to perform at Outreach events.
  • Separate performance fees are required to participate in productions and Touring Ensemble with additional days/times for rehearsals.
  • It is recommended that dancers invest in 8 classes/week – 3 ballet, 3 pointe and 2 modern classes – unless informed otherwise by the Artistic Staff, to continue to improve in knowledge and body strength and to be prepared to perform in VBC’s pre-professional productions.
  • Recreational dancers who are not interested in performing but want to learn Classical Ballet or Modern technique are recommended to enroll in 4-6 classes to maintain their skill as an Advanced dancer.
  • For students to be on pointe they must be registered and attend a minimum of 2 ballet classes and 2 pointe classes per week.

Notes

It is recommended that students, at a minimum, invest the above amount of time into their ballet studies per week, unless informed otherwise by the Director of the School, to keep up with the class and continue to improve in knowledge, body strength and ability to progress to the next level with their fellow classmates.
